Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A six-plank coffer is an early vernacular furniture form constructed from six main oak or pine boards forming the top, bottom, front, back, and two sides. Originating in medieval Europe, this construction technique remained popular through the 17th century for its straightforward utility and strength.

These chests were predominantly crafted from local hardwoods such as oak or elm, secured with iron nails, wooden dowels, or early metal hinges. Additional hardware, such as brass or iron escutcheons, was frequently fitted to protect keyholes.

Authentic period coffers display signs of hand-sawing, irregular plank thicknesses, original peg or blacksmith-forged nail joinery, and natural shrinkage across the grain over centuries. The presence of historic hand-worked hardware and deep, undisturbed oxidation inside the timber also indicates age.

A coffer functions well at the foot of a bed, as a low hallway storage bench, or positioned beneath a window. Its low profile and flat top allow it to serve simultaneously as decorative seating and concealed storage for linens.

Apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth, buffing along the direction of the wood grain to preserve the patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources such as radiators to prevent excessive timber shrinkage or cracking.
