FAQs

Chinoiserie standard lamps gained significant popularity during the early 20th century, reviving an 18th-century decorative movement that reflected European fascination with East Asian art and motifs. These standing lights feature elaborate gilded land- and cityscapes hand-painted onto dark lacquered wood bases, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern electrical illumination.

Traditional standard lamps from this period were predominantly turned from hardwoods such as beech or oak, finished with layers of black, red, or dark green lacquer. The surface detailing was executed in gold leaf or metallic paint, complemented by solid brass bulb holders and weighted bases for stability.

Authentic 1920s pieces typically display hand-applied gilding with natural wear and subtle craquelure across the lacquered surface. Original period fittings often include bayonet brass lamp holders, weighted cast iron plates hidden inside timber base feet, and evidence of early cotton-braided wiring runs.

A Chinoiserie standard lamp serves as a striking focal point when set against neutral or dark paint schemes in modern living rooms and studies. Pairing the dark lacquered column with contemporary silk lampshades bridges classic decorative artistry with minimalist design.

Maintain lacquered surfaces by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical sprays or abrasive cleaners that can strip gilding. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent lacquer shrinkage, and ensure electrical components are inspected by a qualified electrician.
