A silver mounted cut glass inkwell is a small desktop vessel used to store liquid ink for dip pens. It typically comprises a heavy cut glass or crystal base paired with a silver metal collar and hinged cap.

These pieces were produced by hand-cutting geometric patterns into heavy leaded glass or crystal bases. Metal smiths then fitted custom sterling silver or silver-plated collars and hinged tops to protect the ink from evaporation and dust.

Authentic period examples often display silver hallmarks or maker marks stamped along the collar or inside the lid. Hand-cut glass features sharp facet lines, hand-polished edges, and minor weight variations typical of traditional manufacturing.

Place the inkwell on a writing desk, console table, or stack of leather-bound books to add a classic focal point. It can function as a paperweight or a standalone decorative object within a study or library setting.

Clean the glass body using warm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals on the metal fittings. Polish the silver element gently with a soft cotton cloth and dedicated silver polish, ensuring residue does not dry inside the hinge.
