Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Cast tripartite bases with paw feet: early twentieth-century metalwork.
Curved swan-neck arms: favoured shape for 1920s reading standards.
Soft tarnishing in the crevices: natural ageing of the brass.
Modern braided electrical flex: updated for domestic electrical safety.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This pair of standard lamps dating from 1920 follows an Edwardian style and consists of two matching pieces made from brass with a warm brass colour. Each lamp incorporates a slender turned column rising from an ornate triform base decorated with paw feet, topped by an arched swan neck arm carrying scroll ornament at the finial. Signs of age appear as natural surface patina and weathering across the metal finish, with attached electrical flexes and plug fittings resting on the floor. Standing 169 cm high, the pair provides substantial upright illumination suited to placement in a traditional study, a gentleman's library, or a classic living room setting.

A standard lamp is a tall, floor-standing electric lamp designed to provide ambient or task lighting. They gained widespread popularity during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras as domestic electricity replaced gas lighting.

Traditional standard lamps are typically constructed from solid cast or tubular brass, bronze, mahogany, or oak. The bases are often weighted with iron inside the brass casing to ensure stability.

Authentic pieces feature cast brass fittings, naturally occurring surface patination, aged soldering joints, and substantial weight in the base. Historical pieces may also show evidence of early rewiring or original porcelain bulb holders.

Standard lamps can be placed alongside armchairs or sofas to create focused reading areas, or positioned in corners to reflect warm light off walls and highlight architectural details.

Maintain brass lighting by dusting regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive chemical polishes if the metal retains an aged patina or protective lacquer layer.
