A Wall of Large Green Cognac Bottles, France C1935

1920 - 1940
Description

A wall of large green glass Cognac bottles. Each 19.25” high, 5” diameter bottle holds 7 pints (just under 4 litres).

They are ‘old stock’ bottles from the Rouyer Guillet Cognac distillery in Saintes, France, which closedits almost 200 year old facility in 1992. The bottles were bought at that time, by my brother, an antiques dealer living near Saintes.

The bottles were apparently made in the mid / late 1930’s for export to the USA. By law, between 1935 and 1964 all liquor containers produced for the American market had to be embossed with : “FEDERAL LAW FORBIDS SALE OR RE-USE OF THIS BOTTLE”. This law was enacted post the prohibition era to ensure that bottles were not refilled with lower quality products and to guarantee that taxes were paid on all alcohol sales. Each bottle has this instruction embossed in the glass across the upper part of the bottle. At the bottom, also embossed in the glass are the company details:

“ROUYER GUILLET & Co

SAINTES near COGNAC, FRANCE”

Each bottle displays its own imperfections and air bubbles caused during the manufacturing process, visible side seams and deep dimple / punt to the underside.

Displayed here on a forged steel stand to allow uplighting from underneath, 120 bottles fill a space 43”wide x 78” high (109cms x 198cms) to create a stunning room divider.

More bottles available, to create approx 135 sq ft of wall / divider

Date of Manufacture

The Real Wood Furniture Company has dated this French Green Glass Bottle Wall to the 1930s.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This architectural salvage wall dates from the 1930 period and exemplifies an industrial loft style. Formed from large green glass cognac bottles stacked within a grid metal framing, the piece presents a combination of glass and iron materials in a striking green colourway. Each element displays characteristic imperfections, air bubbles from the manufacturing process, visible side seams, and concave punt centres featuring circular glass patterns. The structure is 198 cm high, 109 cm wide, and 49 cm deep. Suitable for use as a structural window feature or room divider, this assembly integrates old stock bottles originally produced for the Rouyer Guillet distillery. Every bottle bears embossed text across the upper section and company details at the bottom, mounted within a forged steel stand designed to accommodate uplighting. The composition creates a geometric pattern of circular glass bases across its surface, bringing industrial character and historical French distillery salvage into modern interior spaces.

Glass bottle walls emerged as an innovative architectural method in Western Europe, repurposing thick wine and cognac bottles to create light-transmitting internal walls and window partitions during the early to mid-20th century.

These installations were constructed using thick, moulded or hand-blown glass bottles set into iron, steel, or timber structural frames, often secured with mortar or custom metal clips.

Authentic pieces feature period glass with natural variations, air bubbles, pontil marks or moulded base punts, uniform dark green or olive colouration, and historical iron structural framing showing natural surface patina.

Position the installation in front of natural daylight, such as a window recess or glass partition wall, to allow sunlight to pass through the coloured glass, creating dynamic light effects across the space.

Dust the glass surfaces regularly with a soft microfibre cloth or dry brush. Clean individual glass elements using non-abrasive glass cleaner while keeping the supporting metal frame dry to prevent rust formation.
