This pair of Victorian silver-plated candlesticks stands 29.2 cm high, 13.3 cm wide and 13.3 cm deep. Each piece exhibits a bright silver colour with polished metal finishes, square shaped fixed nozzles, and intricate shell decoration on each corner of the shaped square bases. Fluted baluster and knopped stems connect the bases to the upper sections, accented by acanthus leaf relief moulding and distinct turnings. Designed in the Georgian style by maker Walker & Hall of Sheffield, the pair functions ideally as a dining table centre in an English Country House setting. The solid metal construction shows very good re-silver plated condition across the entire surface. Each candlestick rests flat on a surface via its four corner-decorated feet, ready for daily interior display and use.

FAQs

Victorian silver-plated candlesticks are characterised by ornate decorative elements drawn from Rococo and Neoclassical revival designs. Common features include cast foliage, acanthus leaves, shell motifs, knopped baluster stems, and contoured bases produced using nineteenth-century electroplating methods.

These items were predominantly crafted from base metals such as nickel silver (a copper-zinc-nickel alloy) or brass, which were then electroplated with a layer of pure silver. This technique allowed intricate castings to be produced with the appearance of solid sterling silver.

Authentic items by Walker & Hall usually bear distinct manufacturer stamps, such as the initials W&H within flags or rectangular shields, alongside electroplate quality markings like EPNS or alphanumeric date codes stamped into the metal rim or base underside.

A pair of silver candlesticks can be arranged as a central focal point on a formal dining table, positioned symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, or styled alongside contemporary glass decorative objects on a side cabinet to contrast traditional metalwork with modern textures.

To maintain silver plate, wipe gently with a soft cotton cloth after use and polish periodically using a non-abrasive silver foam or cream. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive scouring pads, as excessive scrubbing can wear down the thin outer layer of silver plating over time.
