This Edwardian sterling silver and tortoiseshell ring box dates from 1908 and bears the maker's mark of William Comyns for London. The rectangular body has a hinged lid inset with dark brown tortoiseshell, decorated with intricate silver piqué inlay depicting ribbon bows, floral garlands, and a central floral medallion. A beaded silver moulding borders the lid, and three small rounded finials sit along the back hinge. Light bruises mark the silver body, alongside duller patches on the tortoiseshell lid. Inside, the box features a velvet-lined interior styled specifically to hold rings, complemented by a gilded lid interior. Measuring 10 cm in length, 4 cm in width, and 3 cm in height, the piece sits neatly on a bedside table in a bedroom or dressing room to store everyday jewellery.

Silver and tortoiseshell boxes became prominent during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly throughout the Edwardian period. Craftsmen combined silver mountings with tortoiseshell panels, often utilizing techniques like pique work to inlay silver directly into the organic material.

These boxes typically consist of a solid sterling silver framework or mount combined with natural tortoiseshell plates. Decorative elements often feature inlaid silver or gold wire and cut-out foil forming Neoclassical motifs.

Authentic pieces bear official silver hallmarks indicating the assay office, silver purity, maker, and year of production. Natural tortoiseshell shows unique variations in color and pattern under magnification, unlike synthetic imitations, and the silver inlay is physically embedded into the shell surface.

Place the box on a dressing table, vanity tray, or bedside table alongside glass bottles and books. It serves as a decorative storage vessel for small items of jewellery or personal keepsakes.

Keep tortoiseshell items away from direct sunlight, central heating, and high humidity to prevent cracking or warping. Clean the silver carefully with a soft silver-polishing cloth, taking care not to rub harsh chemical polishes into the organic tortoiseshell surface.
