This late Victorian sterling silver Monteith style bowl dates from 1901 and comes from the London makers Daniel & John Wellby. The circular vessel displays a bright silver finish with a curved scroll and masks border, a scalloped rim, cherub masks, embossed vertical fluting, and a domed gadrooned pedestal foot with a ribbed base. Hallmarks are visible on the polished exterior body alongside the deep scroll pattern. It measures 10.2 cm high, 16.5 cm wide, and 16.5 cm deep, with a base width of 8.9 cm and a weight of 10.4 Troy Oz. In a modern home, it suits placement on a sideboard top or dining table as a decorative centrepiece or display vessel. The interior remains plain while the exterior reflects traditional English country house style craftsmanship without inscriptions. The polished surface catches the ambient light, highlighting the relief work of the masks and scrolls around the upper rim and body. Care involves standard silver cleaning methods to maintain the bright metal sheen.

Originating in the late seventeenth century, a Monteith bowl is a deep vessel characterized by a notched or scalloped rim, originally designed to hold glass stems suspended in ice water before evolving into a decorative centrepiece or punch bowl.

Victorian Monteith style bowls are crafted from sterling silver (925 purity) and feature British hallmarks denoting the maker, silver purity, assay office, and date letter, along with cast and embossed decorative moulding.

Authentic British sterling silver from the Victorian era displays a set of official hallmarks including a lion passant, an assay office mark such as a leopards head for London, a date letter, and a makers mark stamped into the metal.

A sterling silver Monteith bowl can be displayed as a central decorative object on a dining table, sideboard, or console table, or utilized as a vessel for floral displays and ice.

Clean the bowl using a non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth, followed by washing in warm soapy water, avoiding chemical dips and dishwasher cleaning.
