This Edwardian open bookcase dates from 1920 and is formed from dark brown oak. It presents a rectangular frame with four tiers of shelving above a deep plinth base, completed by a carved frieze along the top edge. The timber reveals a figured grain pattern with visible medullary ray markings and a mellow patina across the surfaces, alongside dark marks on the lower shelf interior. The bookcase measures 123 cm wide, 25 cm deep, and 116.5 cm high. Positioned in a gentleman's library, home office, or living room, this piece accommodates books, records, and display items. The low profile allows placement beneath a window or along a wall, leaving the upper surface clear for lamps and decorative objects. The interior layout offers multiple storage levels with adjustable shelving to suit varying shelf heights.

Edwardian bookcases from the early 20th century emphasised functionality and lighter proportions compared to heavy Victorian models. They frequently feature solid oak construction, subtle classical mouldings such as egg-and-dart friezes, and adaptable internal shelf arrangements.

Solid English or European oak was the predominant material, often paired with plywood or secondary softwood backboards. Shelving systems used metal sawtooth supports or wooden pegs to allow height adjustments.

Authentic pieces display distinct grain patterns such as quarter-sawn oak flakes, hand-cut dovetail or tongue-and-groove joinery, and honest surface wear or oxidation around the base and shelf edges.

Position the dark timber against neutral or muted walls to highlight the wood grain. Mix rows of books with ceramic vessels or framed artwork on the adjustable shelves to break up visual weight.

Dust regularly using a dry microfiber cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the timber grain. Keep the item away from direct radiators or damp walls to prevent timber movement.
