This large sterling silver inkwell adopts a seventeenth century revival capstan style with a polished silver finish. It consists of a wide dished circular base, a stepped cylindrical body featuring visible hallmarks, and a top surface pierced with multiple circular quill apertures surrounding a small hinged central lid complete with a rounded knob finial. The piece measures 11.5 cm wide by 5.7 cm tall and weighs 300 grams. Suitable for placement on a traditional office desk in a gentleman's library, this functional accessory provides a secure container for writing instruments and ink. The solid construction and classic design suit daily use as a practical desk accessory or a display piece within a study setting.

A capstan style inkwell is a circular desk receptacle designed with a broad flat base and a stepped cylindrical body resembling a ships capstan, popular from the 17th century onwards for holding ink and quills.

Traditional silver inkwells were wrought from solid sterling silver, often featuring a weighted base or attached dished tray, hinged lids with tight seals, and small pierced holes along the top rim to hold quill pens.

Authentic British pieces feature clear official hallmarks stamped into the silver surface, including the lion passant mark for sterling quality, an assay office symbol, a makers mark, and a date letter indicating the year of manufacture.

A silver inkwell can be displayed on an executive office desk, styled atop a stack of hardcover volumes on a library console table, or placed alongside modern stationery in a private study.

Maintain sterling silver by gently polishing with a soft microfibre cloth and specialised silver cream, avoiding abrasive materials that might erode stamped hallmarks or original surface patina.
