Art Nouveau glass is characterised by organic forms, fluid lines, and decorative surface treatments inspired by nature. Makers during this era frequently used iridescence, cameo cutting, and acid etching to create tactile, light-reactive vessels.

The iridescent sheen is achieved by spraying the hot, freshly blown glass with metallic chloride solutions, such as stannous chloride or titanium chloride, before reheating it. This process creates a thin metal oxide layer on the surface that refracts light into a spectrum of colours.

Authentic John Walsh Walsh pieces often exhibit distinct optical moulding techniques, such as swirled or rib patterns, and refined pedestal bases. While some items bear etched registration marks or acid stamps, many period pieces remain unsigned and are identified by glass quality, pontil finish, and catalogued shapes.

Position the glass vessel on a window sill, mantelpiece, or console table where natural sunlight can strike the surface. Pairing clear iridescent glass with dark polished wood or minimalist muted backdrops enhances the spectrum of reflected colours.

Hand wash the item in lukewarm water using mild dish soap and a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive detergents, warm water temperature shifts, or dishwashers, which can dull or degrade surface lustres and iridescent coatings.
