This pair of Victorian table lustres belongs to the nineteenth century, manufactured from clear lead crystal and cut glass with metal wire hardware. Each item has a matching elaborate form incorporating a deeply cut and faceted central column, a scalloped upper gallery, and a starburst cut base. Suspended from wire hooks around the rim are numerous faceted drop pendants and long prism drops that catch the light. The pieces measure 12 cm in width and 21 cm in height, showing good condition commensurate with age including some small nibbles and chips to the lustres. These decorative items suit placement on a mantelpiece in a traditional interior setting.

FAQs

Table lustres are decorative glass candleholders that featured prominently in Victorian homes during the nineteenth century. Designed with a central socket surrounded by hanging cut-glass prisms or drops, they served to catch and amplify candlelight across formal dining rooms and drawing rooms.

Authentic nineteenth-century lustres were primarily constructed from heavy lead crystal or flint glass, which allowed for deep wheel-cutting and high refractive index. The suspended prisms were individually cut and faceted, then attached to small drilled holes near the rim using thin brass or copper wire hooks.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit heavy lead weight, crisp hand-cut edges, and minor irregularities indicative of hand-crafting rather than modern mould production. The wire connectors holding the prisms often show natural patination or tarnish, and hand-ground polished pontil marks may be present on the base.

In modern interiors, glass lustres are typically positioned as symmetrical pairs on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table. Their clear lead crystal composition allows them to integrate easily alongside contemporary minimalism, traditional period decor, or layered eclectic settings.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth or soft brush to prevent grime accumulation on the cut facets. For thorough cleaning, unhook the glass prisms individually and wash them gently in warm water with mild detergent, taking care not to submerge or stress aged metal wire hooks.
