Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Fire dogs, also known as andirons, are heavy metal supports used in pairs within open fireplaces to hold wooden logs off the hearth floor. Elevating the fuel allows air to circulate underneath the fire for improved combustion while keeping burning logs contained.

Nineteenth-century fire dogs were primarily manufactured from cast or wrought iron due to its heat resistance and structural weight. Decorative front uprights were frequently embellished with cast brass, bronze, or polished steel ornaments to suit prevailing interior trends.

Authentic period examples display signs of manual assembly, such as hand-cut threads, square nuts, and hand-riveted joints rather than modern uniform welds. Look for natural oxidation on the iron billets, surface wear consistent with heat exposure, and hand-chased details on the brasswork.

Fire dogs can be arranged inside active or decommissioned open fireplaces to add architectural structure and textural contrast. In non-working hearths, they can hold decorative birch logs or stand independently as sculptural brass and iron accents.

Remove soot and ash with a dry soft-bristle brush, followed by wiping iron components with a light coating of black grate polish or mineral oil to prevent rust. Brass decorative elements can be gently buffed with a suitable metal cleaner using a microfibre cloth.
