This mid-century claret jug stands as an elegant example of the neoclassical revival style, produced by Asprey and Co. Ltd around 1960. The vessel pairs a clear crystal body with solid silver, silver-gilt, and gold-gilded mounts, presenting a colour palette of silver, gold, and transparent glass. The compressed pear-shaped body features hand-etched fruiting grapevines, foliage, and a deeply cut-star pattern upon the base, which is also engraved with the word Brierley. At the top, a beaded border frames a collar adorned with Bacchanalian masks and vines, a spout formed as a Bacchus mask, and a hinged cover topped by an acorn finial. A scrolled, gold-gilded handle extends from the neck to the body, and silver stamps and Asprey marks appear on the mount and beneath the cover. The jug measures 32.5 cm high and 15 cm wide. It serves as a practical and decorative tableware item suited for display upon a dining room sideboard or within a gentleman's library setting, ready to hold and pour claret or other fine wines during formal dining or entertaining.

A Bacchus mask claret jug is a vessel specifically designed for serving red wine, characterised by metal mounts featuring the sculpted face of Bacchus, the Roman god of wine and agriculture.

Traditional claret jugs combine cut, etched, or blown crystal glass bodies with hallmarked sterling silver, silver-gilt, or electroplated nickel silver mounts, spouts, and handles.

Authentic pieces feature official British hallmarks stamped into the silver collar, rim, or handle, including the makers mark for Asprey & Co Ltd, a purity mark, assay office mark, and date letter.

A silver claret jug can be placed on a dining room sideboard, inside a glazed cabinet, or atop a drinks trolley to display fine metalwork alongside modern glassware.

Hand wash the interior glass body using lukewarm water and mild detergent while avoiding submersion of the metalwork, and buff the silver mounts gently with a non-abrasive polishing cloth.
