This large Japanese bronze table lamp dates from the Meiji period around 1910 and takes the form of an urn-shaped vase on a turned wooden base. The dark bronze body has twin cast scroll handles and displays polychrome champlevé enamel scrollwork depicting flowers and plants, complemented by an original old patination and wired with an old-style fabric cable. A white pleated fabric shade tops the assembly, diffusing the light downward. The lamp measures 72 cm high, 42 cm wide and 42 cm deep overall. It sits comfortably on a sideboard top or desk in a gentleman's library, study or traditional living room, providing warm functional illumination and period decorative character.

FAQs

Champleve is an enamelling technique where carved or cast recesses in metal, often bronze, are filled with vitreous enamel paste and fired. Popularised in Japan during the late Edo and Meiji periods, these pieces frequently featured floral patterns, geometric borders, and mythic motifs.

These lamps are primarily crafted from heavy cast bronze featuring inlaid champleve enamel work in opaque shades of blue, red, green, and cream. They are often constructed from converted 19th-century vases or urns fitted with wooden bases and electrical components.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved cells filled with enamel showing slight surface variations, hand-chased bronze work, and natural patination or oxidisation. Weight is another indicator, as genuine cast bronze bases possess significant heft compared to brass reproductions.

A Champleve lamp serves as a focal accent on a sideboard, desk, or entry console in transitional, eclectic, or traditional interiors. Pairing it with a neutral cream or pleated fabric shade balances the dark tones of the bronze base and textured enamel work.

Dust the bronze surface gently using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clean intricate recesses. Avoid using harsh chemical solvents, brass polish, or water on the enamel, as these can strip the original patina and damage the delicate inlay.
