This Edwardian sterling silver and velvet pin cushion takes the form of a hatching chick emerging from a cracked eggshell. The silver casing features textured feather detailing on the head and wings, an open beak, and incised crack lines around the rounded base. A deep red velvet insert forms the back of the chick, serving as the padded surface for pins. Fully hallmarked for Chester 1909 with the maker's mark for Sampson Mordan & Co, the piece measures 2.5 cm in length, 2 cm in height, and 1.5 cm in width. Collectors and sewing enthusiasts place such novelty items on a bookshelf or desk as a decorative decorative accessory in a traditional study.

Edwardian novelty silver pincushions are decorative sewing tools crafted in three-dimensional forms, frequently depicting animals, birds, or functional objects. Produced predominantly in the early 20th century, these objects combined utilitarian function with detailed silversmithing.

These objects were typically constructed from hallmarked sterling silver shells fitted with velvet or plush fabric cushions. The internal cushion material was frequently packed with emery powder or sawdust to keep sewing pins sharp and free from rust.

Authentic examples feature complete British assay marks, including the lion passant for sterling silver, a town mark, a date letter, and a makers mark. Prominent manufacturers such as Sampson Mordan & Co struck clear makers marks onto the silver casing.

Small silver objects can be styled inside glass display cabinets, arranged on bookshelf vignette arrangements, or placed atop a dressing table alongside contemporary accessories to add material contrast.

The silver body should be gently polished using a soft microfibre cloth or dry silver cloth, ensuring chemical liquids or pastes do not saturate or discolour the original fabric cushion.
