Antique Arts & Crafts Style Oak Open Bookcase | Gallery Top

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique early 20th century open bookcase in oak, a handsome piece of neat proportions and good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship in the Arts & Crafts manner.

It offers three open shelf spaces divided by two fixed shelves with moulded front edges, while the top forms a further galleried shelf, ideal for displaying books, plants or ornaments.

The end panels have moulded front edges and rise into gently rounded tops, and at the base they are cut away into shaped feet, with a matching arched apron across the front. The back is made of solid panelled oak, so the bookcase looks just as good from behind.

The oak has a rich, dark finish, almost ebonised in tone, with the figured grain still showing through.

Its slim, narrow form makes it ideal for an alcove, landing, hallway or smaller room. Presented in good condition. A very desirable antique bookcase, the perfect addition to any home.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late nineteenth century in reaction to industrial mass production, emphasizing traditional craftsmanship, simple rectilinear forms, and honest construction techniques.

Pieces from this era typically feature native hardwoods such as oak, constructed using traditional joinery methods including mortise and tenon joints, dovetailing, and pegged construction without modern adhesives.

Authentic items display hand-finished timber, visible joint details, quarter-sawn oak grain patterns, and simple geometric profiles rather than applied decorative mouldings.

Place an open oak bookcase against a neutral wall to highlight its silhouette, populating shelves with a mix of bound books, studio ceramics, and structural objects to balance functionality and visual interest.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding synthetic spray polishes and keeping timber away from direct heat sources.
