Antique Victorian Elm & Ash Cutler’s Stool C.1850

19th century
Description

A good original mid 19th-century cutler’s stool, the thick well-figured elm slab seat raised on three broadly splayed ribbed ash legs.

Rooted in the Sheffield cutlery-making tradition, the distinctively ribbed ash legs provide an arresting, sculptural presence. Its broad tripod splay sits rock-solid on irregular flagstones, functioning naturally as an authentic fireside seat or hall perch.

Very good antique condition with an abundance of characterful surface wear, marks and a rich patina consistent with long practical use. Structurally solid, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1850.

This Victorian rustic country cutler’s stool dates from circa 1850. It pairs a thick elm slab seat with three turned ash splayed legs, held together by wedged mortise tenon joints visible on the upper surface. The dark brown timber displays an abundance of characterful surface wear, marks and a rich patina consistent with long practical use, while the seat is subtly contoured for comfort. At 40 cm high, 41 cm wide and 29 cm deep, this tripod piece sits solidly on any floor. Placed indoors today, the stool functions naturally as an authentic fireside hearth seat or a compact hall perch. Its small footprint allows it to slip easily into narrow entryways, beneath console tables or beside a living room armchair as an occasional perch.

A cutlers stool is a low, sturdy seating piece traditionally used in workshops and cutlery trades during the nineteenth century. These stools typically feature three splayed legs designed to maintain stability on uneven workshop floors.

Vernacular country stools were commonly crafted from native English hardwoods, utilizing dense elm for shaped seats due to its resistance to splitting, and tough ash or oak for the turned or tapered legs.

Authentic period examples feature wedged mortise and tenon joints visible on the top of the seat, hand-tooled leg profiles, authentic surface wear consistent with age, and a rich, natural patina.

A rustic stool functions as an accent piece beside a hearth, as an occasional side table for books, or as a textured display stand for ceramics and plants in living rooms and bathrooms.

Preserve the surface by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
