A pair of antique Georgian salt cellars originating from 1820 in London, produced by Rebecca Emes and Edward Barnard I. The objects are made from sterling silver with a silver-gilt interior, exhibiting a silver and gold colour scheme, a rectangular form with a concave profile, gadrooned rims, and shaped pedestal bases. Visible details include minor scratches to the bottom indicating age, alongside the smooth polished exterior and ribbed foot mouldings. The pieces measure 9.5 cm long, 7.5 cm wide, and 4.75 cm tall. These salt cellars suit placement on a dining table or sideboard top in a traditional or period dining room. They function practically as small table servers or act as decorative objects for display alongside other antique silverware.

Antique table salts, also known as open salt cellars, are small containers designed to hold salt on the dining table before free-flowing salt and shakers were invented. In the Georgian and Regency eras, salt was an expensive commodity, and decorative silver salts served as both functional items and status symbols during formal meals.

Regency salt cellars were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or Sheffield plate, often featuring a gilded interior (vermeil). The gilding served a practical purpose, as pure silver reacts chemically with sodium chloride, causing corrosion and tarnish.

Authentic British Regency silver table salts carry official hallmarking, including a makers mark, town mark (such as the leopards head for London), sovereign head duty mark, lion passant for sterling quality, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of manufacture.

In contemporary settings, antique silver salts can be repurposed on a sideboard or dressing table to display small jewellery pieces, incorporated into formal dinner table settings as salt dips, or placed inside glass cabinet displays alongside period dining metalwork.

Clean silver salts using a soft, lint-free cloth and a specialized silver polish, taking care to avoid harsh abrasive chemicals. The interior gilding should be wiped gently with warm soapy water rather than silver cleaner to prevent stripping the thin gold layer.
