Faux cameo glass refers to glassware decorated using acid-etching techniques on overlay glass to imitate carved cameo relief. Popularised by French makers around 1900, the process involves removing layers of coloured glass to reveal a textured or clear background pattern beneath.

Pieces were typically crafted from lead crystal overlaid with a thin layer of coloured glass, such as cranberry or cobalt. Hydrofluoric acid was applied to selectively etch away the coloured layer, creating precise motifs and textured backgrounds.

Authentic pieces exhibit weight associated with high lead content, crisp acid-etched details, and smooth, fire-polished rims. Many items produced after 1936 carry an etched acid mark, while earlier pieces from around 1910 often featured paper labels or distinct pattern numbers recorded in historical trade catalogues.

Single accent goblets can be displayed inside illuminated glass cabinets or placed on a sideboard top alongside silver tray arrangements. Integrating colourful antique glass into modern table settings provides textural contrast against neutral linen and timber surfaces.

Hand wash stemware individually in lukewarm water using mild dishwashing liquid and a soft sponge. Avoid dishwashers, extreme temperature changes, and abrasive cloths that could scratch the etched surface or damage delicate glass stems.
