This English Victorian solid sterling silver vinaigrette box dates to 1853 and carries Birmingham hallmarks for maker David Pettifer. The silver piece displays a shaped lobed scalloped edge, a tartan criss-cross engine-turned geometric engraving, and a central engraved cartouche containing monogram initials JK. The exterior shows a silver colour with polished metal highlights and minor age-related surface wear, while the interior retains its original sponge. It measures 3.9 cm across by 2 cm wide and weighs 14 grams. In a contemporary home, this small pocket container sits neatly on a dressing table top or a sideboard top to hold small trinkets, or functions as a decorative accessory in a collector's display cabinet. The solid construction and compact dimensions make it easy to place on any small surface in a living room, study, or bedroom.

A vinaigrette was a small ornamental box used primarily in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to hold a sponge soaked in scented vinegar or perfume to ward off unpleasant odours.

Victorian vinaigrettes were typically constructed from sterling silver, often featuring a gilded interior to protect the metal from acidic liquids, alongside intricate engine-turned engraving and hand-chased borders.

Authentic pieces feature official British hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling silver, an assay office symbol, a date letter, and a makers mark stamped into the metal.

Small silver items can be styled on a decorative tray, placed inside a glass display dome, or arranged on a bookshelf alongside other silver collectables.

Clean gently using a soft, lint-free cloth and a specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive materials or immersing functional hinges and internal grilles in water.
