This pair of Edwardian toast racks hails from 1904, carrying Chester hallmarks and the maker's mark for Haseler Brothers. Fashioned from sterling silver, the matching pair presents a bright silver finish suited to traditional table settings. Each rack comprises multiple arched wire loops rising from a rectangular base, fitted with a central vertical ring handle at the top and elevated on four small ball feet at the corners. Measuring 8 cm high, 8 cm in length, and 4 cm wide, these silver racks find practical placement on a sideboard top or breakfast table in a home today. They serve well for holding slices of toast during morning meals or afternoon tea, bringing classic English Country House style and functional period charm to contemporary dining spaces.

Silver toast racks emerged in Great Britain during the late 18th century as specialized breakfast tableware. Designed to separate slices of toast and allow steam to escape, they became standard features of formal dining services throughout the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Edwardian toast racks were predominantly constructed from solid sterling silver or silver plate. Wirework frames were soldered to base rails, often supported by small cast feet such as ball, bun, or pad designs.

Authentic British sterling silver items from the Edwardian period feature a series of stamped assay marks. These typically include a makers mark, the lion passant for sterling quality, a town mark (such as Chester or Birmingham), and a date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

Beyond traditional breakfast table settings, antique silver toast racks are frequently repurposed on office desks as letter holders or stationery sorters. They can also be styled on vanity tables to organise letters, postcards, or small notebooks.

Sterling silver should be washed gently in warm water with mild soap and dried immediately with a soft cloth. Tarnish can be removed using a specialized silver polishing cloth or cream, avoiding abrasive cleaners that could damage delicate solder joints.
