This late Victorian double photograph frame dates from 1897 and bears hallmarks from Birmingham by Henry Matthews. The piece consists of two hinged frames with tall, shaped bodies in sterling silver over a dark velvet backing. The silver mounts display intricate pierced scrollwork and lattice detailing around slightly arched photo apertures, complete with bevelled glass. The overall height is 32 cm, with a total width of 45 cm for both panels. In a modern interior, this double frame functions well placed on a mantelpiece or desk to display family portraits. The hinged design allows the panels to be angled as needed to suit the surface placement. The deep blue fabric visible through the apertures contrasts with the bright silver and dark backing materials, creating a traditional tabletop display item.

Victorian silver photograph frames typically featured elaborate ornamentation such as scrollwork, foliage, and pierced trellis patterns, manufactured towards the late 19th century as personal portrait photography gained widespread popularity.

Late Victorian frames were commonly crafted from stamped or pierced sterling silver mounted onto velvet or leather easel backs, often complete with glass apertures to protect delicate paper prints.

Authentic pieces bear official British hallmark stamps indicating the purity mark, assay office, date letter, and makers mark, along with signs of period hand-finishing on the reverse backing.

Position the frame on a dark wood mantelpiece, a console table, or alongside a curated collection of modern glass objects to create a refined, layered surface display.

Clean gently using a soft, non-abrasive cotton cloth and a specialised silver polishing foam, ensuring liquid solutions do not contact the velvet backing or glass seals.
