This William IV sterling silver gilt vinaigrette, hallmarked in Birmingham in 1832 by Nathaniel Mills, exhibits detailed Regency craftsmanship. The rectangular box displays an engine-turned pattern on all exterior sides and opens to reveal a heavily gilt interior featuring a finely pierced floral grille and a hinged lid with engraved leaf and flower decoration. The silver-and-gold colour palette contrasts the polished exterior with the rich internal gilding, while the visible hallmarks stamp the maker and origin clearly inside the lid. Measuring 3.3 cm x 2.5 cm x 0.9 cm, the piece sits neatly on a sideboard top as a decorative collectible or period display item.

A silver vinaigrette is a small personal container produced primarily from the late eighteenth to mid-nineteenth centuries designed to hold a sponge soaked in aromatic vinegar to mask unpleasant odours.

Most vinaigrettes were constructed from sterling silver or gold, frequently featuring silver-gilt interiors to protect the metallic surfaces from the corrosive nature of acetic acid.

Authentic British pieces display official hallmarks including a makers mark, town assay mark, date letter, lion passant, and the sovereigns duty mark.

Small antique silver items can be displayed under glass cloches, placed atop stacked books, or arranged in shallow collection trays on sideboards and desks.

Clean silver gilt gently using a soft cotton cloth to remove dust, avoiding chemical polish compounds that can abrade the gold layer over time.
