This mid-19th century solid walnut stool follows the William and Mary revival style, measuring 42.5 cm high, 42.5 cm wide, and 42.5 cm deep. The dark brown timber supports a square padded seat upholstered in a cream linen mix fabric decorated with embroidered green leaves and gold patterns. Four spiral barley twist legs terminate in large bun feet and connect via spiral turned stretchers meeting at a central shaped dais with a turned finial. Well padded, heavy, robust and comfortable, the piece functions practically at the end of a sofa in a living room setting. The solid construction shows no worm, repairs, significant dings, or scuffs, maintaining good symmetry and well-balanced proportions throughout its structure.

Originating in the late 17th century, William and Mary style furniture features Dutch and Flemish influences, characterised by spiral-carved or trumpet-turned legs, ball feet, serpentine stretchers, and rich timber construction such as walnut.

19th-century revival pieces typically utilised solid walnut or oak, featuring hand-turned barley twist legs, traditional mortise-and-tenon joints, and webbed upholstered seating frames.

Examine the underside for hand-sawn timber marks, traditional joint construction, natural patina on the carved walnut turnings, and light wear patterns consistent with age.

Position the stool beside an armchair as an accent footrest, or place it beneath a console table or dressing table to introduce timber texture and historical contrast.

Dust the walnut woodwork regularly with a soft cloth and apply natural beeswax periodically to protect the timber finish, while gently vacuuming the textile with a soft brush attachment.
