Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian silver plated tea sets typically feature decorative techniques such as fluting, gadrooning, and chased engraving. Introduced in the mid-19th century following the development of electroplating, these sets allowed households to display the aesthetic of solid sterling silver at a lower cost.

Most Victorian silver plate was manufactured using electroplated nickel silver (EPNS), where a thin layer of silver was deposited onto a nickel alloy base via electrolysis. Tea and coffee pots frequently featured heat insulators made of bone, ivory, or wood integrated into the metal handles.

Authentic pieces usually feature manufacturer stamps such as EPNS, EPBM, or maker trade marks on the underside of the base. Look for age-appropriate surface wear, natural oxidisation in recessed fluting, and insulated handle joints on the pots.

Display the set assembled on a tray atop a sideboard, drinks trolley, or kitchen dresser to create a focal point. Contrast the reflective metallic finish against dark painted surfaces or natural timber backgrounds to emphasize the silhouette.

Clean silver plate using a soft cloth and a specialized silver polish formulated for electroplated items, avoiding abrasive creams that remove the outer silver layer. Wash with warm water and mild liquid soap, ensuring handle insulators are not submerged, and dry thoroughly.
