This silver plated nineteenth-century lidded jug stands 22 cm high with a diameter of 12 cm and a total diameter including handle and spout of 21 cm, weighing 798 g. The piece incorporates a hinged domed lid, a C-scroll handle, a thumbpiece, a shaped spout, and a pedestal foot with turned mouldings. Elaborate foliate engraving covers the body, complemented by chased decoration, the University of Cambridge crest on top, and an inscription detailing a Pembroke College sports event from March 1857. Condition is good antique with signs of use including tarnish marks, small bruises, and minor splits around the spout and lid. Suitably sized for display on a sideboard top, the jug fits well within a gentleman's library or a traditional study setting. It serves as a decorative display object or a collector's piece celebrating academic sports history at the University of Cambridge. The polished silver finish reflects light, highlighting the detailed botanical motifs and historical engravings across the metal surface. Maintenance involves careful cleaning with appropriate silver care products to preserve the finish without damaging the antique chased and engraved details.

Mid-Victorian silver hollowware is characterised by hand-engraved scrolling foliage, chased floral motifs, and classical proportions inspired by earlier 18th-century designs.

These vessels were typically crafted from sterling silver or electroplated nickel silver, featuring cast thumbpieces, hinged domed lids, and hand-chased surface embellishments.

Authentic pieces feature standard British hallmarks indicating silver purity, makers marks, city assay marks, and date letters, alongside period-appropriate engraved inscriptions.

An antique silver jug can be placed on a sideboard, displayed on a library bookshelf, or arranged as a dining table centrepiece to add metallic texture to a space.

Wash gently with warm water and mild dishwashing liquid, dry thoroughly with a soft cloth, and polish periodically with silver cleaner to prevent tarnish accumulation.
