This Victorian four-piece tea and coffee set, produced around 1890 by Henry Wilkinson and Company in Sheffield, comprises a coffee pot, a teapot, a sugar basin, and a cream jug. Each piece is fashioned from silver plate with a silver colour finish, complemented by contrasting dark ebonised wood handles and round black finials. The bodies feature distinct diagonal spiral fluting, rounded tapering silhouettes, and engraved geometric borders around the rims. The coffee pot stands 18.4 cm high with an oval body measuring 12.7 cm by 8.9 cm, and the entire set weighs 50 troy ounces following recent re-silver plating. Set upon a dining room sideboard top in an English country house interior, this matching service provides an elegant setting for formal afternoon tea or after-dinner coffee service.

Victorian silver-plated tea services emerged during the mid-to-late nineteenth century following the commercial development of electroplating. These sets typically consist of matching pieces such as teapots, coffee pots, cream jugs, and sugar bowls, frequently styled with elaborate fluting, engraving, or period motifs to imitate solid sterling silver.

These items were manufactured using Electroplated Nickel Silver (EPNS), where a base alloy of nickel, copper, and zinc is coated with a thin layer of fine silver through electrolysis. Handles and finials on hot beverage pots often incorporated carved ebonised wood or heat-insulating bone washers to prevent heat transfer.

Authentic pieces carry stamped manufacturer marks, often accompanied by letter codes such as EPNS or EPBM. Look for design elements typical of the era, such as spiral fluting, cast spouts, and hand-fitted hinges, along with minor surface wear at raised edges where the nickel base metal may show through.

A complete tea set can be displayed on a dining sideboard, dressed tray, or drinks trolley to introduce texture and reflective contrast against timber surfaces. The bright metallic finish complements traditional, eclectic, and transitional interior schemes.

Maintain silver plate by dusting with a soft cloth and polishing occasionally using a non-abrasive silver cream specifically formulated for plated metals. Avoid dishwasher cleaning, harsh chemicals, and aggressive rubbing, which can strip the thin silver coating from the base metal.
