This seventeenth-century bureau desk is a Jacobean antique made of solid oak with a warm brown timber finish and original brass drop handles. The design includes a slant-front lid that opens on loper supports, above two short and two long oak-lined drawers framed by traditional drawer mouldings, all raised on shaped bracket feet. The visible hardware comprises brass teardrop handles and escutcheons on the drawers, alongside a brass escutcheon on the slant-front fall, while the wood displays natural age-related surface patination and wear. Standing 106.5 cm high, 97 cm wide, and 59 cm deep, the desk occupies a practical footprint for everyday placement. In a modern interior, this piece serves as a functional writing desk or statement storage unit in a study, home office, or living room. The bureau provides a dedicated writing surface combined with generous drawer storage beneath, accommodating paperwork and everyday items while adding period character to the room. The traditional oak construction and classic silhouette integrate naturally into both historic and contemporary home settings.

An antique oak bureau is a sloping-front writing desk integrated above a series of drawers, originating in late 17th-century Europe. The angled fall-front opens to reveal a fitted interior with small drawers, pigeonholes, and a writing surface.

Pieces from this era were primarily constructed from solid European oak, utilizing hand-cut dovetail joints, wood peg fastenings, and iron or brass hardware such as drop handles and lock escutcheons.

Authentic period bureaus typically feature hand-sawn timber marks, uneven drawer construction, original loper supports for the flap, and signs of age-appropriate patination around handles and keyholes.

An oak bureau functions as a focal point in a study, hallway, or living room, offering modern utility as a compact workstation while pairing effectively with modern lighting and contemporary art.

Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional application of a high-quality beeswax polish maintains the timber moisture. Avoid positioning near direct heat sources or in fluctuating humidity to prevent wood movement.
