This pair of early Victorian foot stools dates from 1850 and exhibits an English Country House style. Each circular piece measures 10 cm high, 27 cm wide and 27 cm deep, formed with a warm brown maple frame and brass ball feet. The removable cushions feature wool needlepoint upholstery in teal, displaying a cream floral embroidery motif at the centre. Around the lower perimeter, an inlaid mosaic border runs along the timber surface, accompanied by small dents and minor veneer losses. These compact items suit placement beside a fireplace hearth or as low seats within a living room. The round profile allows them to sit comfortably underneath low tables or beside armchairs when not in use. Their sturdy wooden construction and upholstered tops provide a functional seat or footrest while introducing traditional Victorian textile work and woodwork details into an interior space.

Early Victorian footstools from Tunbridge Wells are characterised by decorative inlaid woodwork borders combined with embroidered wool upholstery. Popular during the mid-19th century, these low seating accessories were designed to keep feet off cold drafty floors while showcasing needlework craft.

These footstools typically feature turned or steam-bent timber frames made from maple, walnut, or mahogany, embellished with micro-mosaic wood inlay borders. The seat cushions are upholstered in hand-stitched wool needlepoint tapestry and supported by small ceramic, brass, or wooden feet.

Authentic pieces display genuine geometric wood-mosaic borders crafted from tiny natural timber tesserae rather than painted patterns. Look for uneven hand-stitched backing, natural wool fading, antique patination on the timber underside, and original fixings for the feet.

Place a pair near a fireplace hearth or directly in front of an armchair to add visual texture and historical depth. Their compact proportion and muted upholstery tones integrate seamlessly into classic, layered, or transitional interior schemes.

Keep textiles away from direct sunlight to reduce colour fading and dry degradation. Dust the needlework gently using a low-suction vacuum with a soft brush attachment, and clean the wooden frame using a natural beeswax polish applied with a soft cloth.
