This Edwardian sterling silver menu holder and place marker is designed in the form of love hearts, featuring an upright heart spring clip mounted on a double-heart flat base. The solid silver piece displays a reflective silver colour with visible surface scratches and light wear acquired over time, alongside a small hallmark visible near the lower edge of the front heart element. It measures 3.7 cm wide by 3.2 cm tall and weighs 23 grams. This item sits on a dining table center, where it holds menus or place cards for formal meals and dinner parties in an English country house setting.

During the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, silver menu holders and place card markers were placed on dining tables during formal meals to display printed menus or guest name cards.

Edwardian menu holders were predominantly crafted from hallmarked sterling silver, incorporating stamped or cast components secured to flat, stable bases.

Authentic items bear official British hallmarks, including the lion passant standard mark, an assay office city mark, a date letter, and the makers mark associated with Sampson Mordan & Co.

An antique silver place marker can be positioned on a contemporary dining table for formal entertaining, or repurposed on an office desk or console table to hold small art cards or photographs.

Sterling silver should be wiped gently with a soft, non-abrasive silver polishing cloth to remove surface tarnish, avoiding harsh liquid chemicals or submerged washing.
