This Georgian sterling silver tea caddy spoon from 1850 takes the form of a naturalistic leaf-shaped bowl with a serrated edge, an engraved network of veins across the silver surface, and a coiled ring handle resembling a twig. Joseph Williams of Birmingham made the piece, which weighs 0.38 Troy Oz and measures 5 cm wide by 5 cm deep. Stylistically suited to an English Country House interior, the spoon functions today as a decorative accessory displayed on a sideboard top or within a collection of small silver objects. The polished silver reflects light across the textured leaf surface while the looped handle provides a secure grip for serving loose leaf tea.

Introduced during the late 18th century, tea caddy spoons were short-handled utensils created specifically to fit inside tea caddies for measuring loose leaf tea. Crafted in imaginative forms such as leaves, shells, and scoops, they reflected the status and expense associated with tea consumption in Georgian Britain.

Authentic Georgian caddy spoons were predominantly hand-fashioned from sterling silver. Silversmiths used techniques like die-stamping, chasing, and engraving to produce detailed textures, often forming ring, stem, or loop handles integrated directly into leaf-shaped or fluted bowls.

Genuine British Georgian silver features standard official hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling purity, a makers mark, the sovereigns head duty mark, a town mark, and a specific date letter. Assessing these stamped marks against assay office records verifies authenticity and dating.

Collectors display silver caddy spoons in glass-fronted cabinets, mounted within shadow box frames, or positioned alongside antique tea caddies. They also serve as decorative accents on a dining sideboard tray or curated drinks trolley.

Wash the piece gently in warm water with mild dish soap and dry immediately using a microfibre cloth. Apply a specialized silver polish sparingly with a soft cotton pad to dissolve tarnish, avoiding heavy pressure to protect fine surface engraving and hallmarks.
