Oliver Sargent Antiques has dated this Victorian Blue Transferware Plate to the 19th Century.
A rare and impressive large blue and white transfer-printed wavy-edge round plate or platter by William Smith & Co, dating to circa 1840, featuring the scarce central transfer-printed scene “Hannibal Passing the Alps.”
The centre depicts the dramatic historical scene of Hannibal crossing the Alps, surrounded by an attractive blue and white transfer-printed border. The large wavy or shaped edge and unusually generous 43 cm diameter make this an especially impressive example for collectors of 19th-century Staffordshire pottery, transferware, historical scenes and William Smith & Co ceramics.
The underside retains the original markings, including impressed marks for William Smith & Co, together with the underglaze blue “W S & Co” and “71 Tourist” marks.
Condition
A particularly fine example in original, unrestored condition. The plate is free from chips, fritting, cracks and hairline cracks. It has not been restored, making it an attractive example for the serious collector of early Victorian and Georgian-period transferware.
