1930s Birmingham Silver Mr Punch Baby Rattle Teether with Bells C.1938

An attractive vintage English silver baby rattle and teether modelled in the form of Mr Punch, probably Birmingham and dating from the late 1930s.

The central silver fitting is worked in relief with scrolling decoration and the distinctive exaggerated features associated with the traditional Mr Punch character. It is suspended from a large pale circular teething ring and fitted with several pendant silver bells, producing the characteristic sound for which these novelty infant rattles were made.

The pale ring appears to be an ivorine, celluloid or similar early synthetic material rather than something I would describe as ivory without testing.

One of the small bells is detached but accompanies the rattle. There is also visible damage/loss to the raised decorative section on the central body, which should be noted in the condition description.

An old handwritten note accompanying the piece records “John Neville’s Baby Rattle 1938” and suggests Birmingham manufacture. The date is entirely consistent with the style and type, although I would treat the note as supporting family provenance rather than as a formal assay or maker attribution.

Mr Punch rattles were a recognised speciality of Birmingham silver manufacturers during the early 20th century and were produced by a number of firms in the inter-war period.
