Old Sheffield Plate refers to a process invented in 1742 by Thomas Boulsover, where a layer of sterling silver was thermally fused to copper ingots before being rolled into sheets. This manufacturing method was widely used for hollowware and church plate until the commercial introduction of electroplating in the 1840s.

Antique chalices were predominantly crafted from sterling silver, gilded silver (vermeil), or silver fused over copper, known as Old Sheffield Plate. The interiors of drinking vessels were frequently gilded with gold wash to prevent corrosion caused by wine and ritual liquids.

Authentic pieces usually display a faint seam line where the silver sheet was folded or joined, along with a distinct copper core visible along worn edges or the rim. Unlike electroplated silver, Old Sheffield Plate items from the early nineteenth century feature struck makers marks or pseudo-hallmarks rather than standard electroplate stamps.

A pair of antique silver chalices can be displayed as decorative accents on a dark wood sideboard, shelf, or library mantle. Their metallic contrast and structured form complement modern dark academia, traditional English country, or Gothic-inspired interiors.

Clean Old Sheffield Plate gently using a soft cloth and specialized non-abrasive silver polish to prevent wearing through the thin silver layer to the base copper. Avoid prolonged exposure to high humidity, store in tarnish-inhibiting felt, and clean liquids immediately to avoid surface oxidisation.
