Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Dutch Rococo Revival solid silver tea caddy box from 1890 stands upon four small turned feet and features a rectangular body with a detachable finial lid. The polished silver surface is worked in high-relief repousse with detailed pastoral scenes showing figures, animals, cottages, and trees within arched frames of shell scrollwork and floral swags, complemented by similar embossed landscapes on the stepped lid and small upper superstructure. Hallmarks appear alongside pseudo marks. Measuring 11.5 cm tall by 6.8 cm across, the object sits on a sideboard top to hold loose tea leaves or small dry goods within an English Country House interior scheme.

FAQs

Dutch silver tea caddies were crafted during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to securely store valuable loose-leaf tea. Dutch silversmiths became renowned across Europe for applying detailed repousse relief work depicting traditional genre, floral, and pastoral scenes onto functional tableware.

These caddies were predominantly raised from solid silver sheets using chasing and repousse techniques, where metal is hammered from the reverse to create detailed raised relief designs. Lids were constructed with precise fittings to maintain an airtight seal, often topped with cast finials.

Authentic pieces carry Dutch hallmark stamps indicating silver purity, city of manufacture, and the silversmiths maker mark. The craftsmanship exhibits characteristic hand-hammered relief work rather than modern cast reproduction methods.

A silver tea caddy can be styled on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or bookshelf alongside glassware and hardcover books. Its reflective metal surface provides texture and contrast when placed against dark wood or painted surfaces.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply specialised silver polish sparingly to clear oxidisation from high points. Avoid harsh chemical dips or abrasive scrubbing tools that can wear down delicate raised relief details.
