Old Sheffield Plate is a process invented in 1742 by Thomas Boulsover, where a layer of sterling silver is fused onto a copper ingot before being rolled into sheets and worked into tableware and decorative items.

Mid-18th-century pin trays were predominantly made from sterling silver or Old Sheffield Plate, featuring struck, fluted, or pierced copper-backed silver sheets finished with hand-cut details.

Authentic pieces feature copper visible at exposed edges or wear points, double-skin construction on folded rims, and hand-pierced or die-struck fluting typical of mid-18th-century production.

A small silver pin tray serves as a functional decorative vessel on a hallway console, dressing table, or bedside nightstand to hold keys, cufflinks, or jewellery.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish formulated for plated metal, avoiding heavy scrubbing that might strip the thin fused silver layer down to the copper core.
