Antique Edwardian Inlaid Mahogany Open Bookcase

1900 - 1920
Description

A very smart and well made antique Edwardian inlaid mahogany open bookcase. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1900-1910 period.

It is of lovely quality and is a very useful size. The mahogany has a gorgeous colour tone and patina, there is inlaid satin wood banding around the top and front edges, as well as on the shelf fronts. The two shelves are adjustable, there is plenty of storage space inside.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with just some extremely minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian open bookcases, produced between 1901 and 1910, feature lighter proportions than Victorian antecedents, incorporating rich mahogany with satinwood stringing, exposed shelf tiers, and simplified neoclassical mouldings.

Primary timbers included mahogany, walnut, and satinwood, frequently accented with fine boxwood or ebony inlays, while solid pine or oak was used for backboards and internal shelf supports.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, original shellac or French polish finishes with subtle surface patination, and precise geometric inlay work along the frieze or uprights.

An open mahogany bookcase provides versatile storage in contemporary living rooms or home offices, displaying organized volumes alongside ceramic vessels or sculptural objects against neutral backgrounds.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, dry lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, buffing in the direction of the wood grain.
