An antique 18ct yellow gold boat ring dates from 1919 and carries full hallmarks from Chester. The design incorporates three natural opals alternating with two old cut diamonds, arranged within a boat-shaped setting adorned with scroll detailing along the shoulders. The central opal is flanked by smaller diamonds and outer opals, all held securely within yellow gold claw settings, while the polished band displays a buttery gold colour. The face of the ring measures 1.2 cm across and 6 mm wide. Visual inspection reveals several additional details not mentioned in the dealer text, including the cream-coloured fabric lining the display box, the metallic gold rim of the interior compartment, and the antique brass hinge joining the container lid. This piece suits everyday wear on the hand or display within a private jewellery collection, serving as a suitable gift for an October birthday.

A boat setting, also known as a navette mount, features an elongated, tapered shape resembling the hull of a vessel designed to set gemstones flush along the finger band.

Edwardian boat rings were commonly crafted in 18ct or 15ct yellow gold and set with natural gemstones such as opals, diamonds, sapphires, or rubies.

Authentic British pieces feature official assay marks stamped inside the band, including gold purity symbols, town marks such as the Chester acorn, and specific date letters.

An antique boat ring functions as an elegant focal dress ring on its own or paired alongside simple contemporary gold bands for a textured look.

Opals are porous and delicate, requiring protection from water, harsh chemicals, extreme temperature changes, and ultrasonic cleaners to maintain their surface polish.
