This Victorian sterling silver table snuff box holds personal historical resonance through its detailed presentation inscription. The rectangular solid silver body features a shaped rim with a flowing scrollwork border framing the engraved text on the hinged lid, while the sides display continuous foliate scroll engraving. The metal exhibits a polished silver finish with natural light reflections across its undulating surfaces. Measuring 7.8 cm across by 5.6 cm wide by 1.9 cm tall and weighing 94 grams, the box works well on an office desk as a small storage vessel or decorative paperweight. It provides a tactile connection to mid nineteenth-century Scottish church history and fits neatly within a gentleman's library collection or study setting.

Popular from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, silver snuff boxes were small pocket containers designed to hold finely ground tobacco for inhaling. They often served as presentation gifts or symbols of social status.

These boxes were typically crafted from sterling silver or coin silver, featuring hand-engraved scrollwork, chased borders, and gilded interiors to prevent the contents from reacting with the metal.

Authentic pieces generally feature official silver hallmarks indicating purity, makers marks, city marks, and date letters, alongside hand-engraved details and tight-fitting hinges.

Small decorative silver boxes are suited for styling on a desk, layered on a coffee table tray, or arranged alongside leather-bound books and brass accessories.

Clean gently with a soft cotton cloth and specialised silver polish, avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive materials. Store in a low-humidity environment to minimise oxidisation.
