Antique Georgian Style Mahogany Breakfront Bookcase

1920 - 1940
Description

A large and impressive antique Georgian style mahogany breakfront bookcase. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1930-1950’s.

It is of superb quality, with fantastic proportions and lots of storage space. It sits on a plinth base with four panelled lower doors. There are four beautiful astral glazed upper doors, and stunning teardrop mouldings, beneath a dental cornice. The upper shelves are all adjustable, the inside is polished.

We have just had this re-polished, it is in very good condition for its age. There is just some light wear here and there and a nice patina, commensurate for age.

The top lifts off the bottom and this comes in two pieces for ease of transport.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian breakfront bookcase is characterized by a central section that projects forward beyond two flanking side sections. Emerging in 18th-century Britain, these large-scale storage cabinets feature glazed upper doors with geometric astragal glazing bars and solid timber cupboards in the base.

Primary woods included imported West Indian and South American mahogany, valued for its stability and rich grain pattern. Secondary timbers such as pine or oak were used for drawer linings and back panels, while glass panes were hand-blown and secured with putty and wood astragals.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed timber backboards, and slight irregularities in the original cylinder glass panes. Cast brass hardware, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and natural shrinkage marks in the wood grain also indicate period construction.

A substantial breakfront bookcase serves as a architectural focal point against neutral walls in a study or dining room. The shelves can be curated with a mix of hardback books, ceramics, and framed artwork to break up the dense timber visual weight.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year following the timber grain. Clean glass panes using a vinegar-based solution applied directly to a cloth to avoid dampening the wood astragal bars.
