Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Herringbone feather banding around the top and drawers: careful early cabinet work.
Half-round mouldings applied to the body edges between drawers: early eighteenth-century construction.
Shallow depth and compact width: designed as a classic early Georgian kneehole dressing chest.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This George I period kneehole desk belongs to the Georgian era and serves as a writing table for a study or home office. The piece uses warm brown figured walnut timber with a quarter veneered, crossbanded, and featherbanded top, complemented by brass drop handles and a central recessed cupboard enclosed by a door. Six pedestal drawers flank the central opening alongside a long frieze drawer and a shallow drawer above the cupboard, all resting on shaped apron bracket feet. The dimensions measure 77 cm high, 71 cm wide, and 45 cm deep. Practical for daily writing tasks, this desk fits neatly against a wall in a study, library, or living room. The compact proportions provide surface workspace while keeping stationery and papers organised within the multiple drawers. The neutral brown timber tones blend easily with traditional and transitional room schemes, offering a functional workspace with classic period proportions.

FAQs

Originating in the early 18th century, George I kneehole desks are compact writing tables characterised by a central recessed cupboard for legs or storage, flanked by vertical banks of small drawers and typically finished in figured walnut veneers.

Craftsmen predominantly used native and imported walnut veneers, such as burr or figured walnut, set over oak or pine carcases, accented with herringbone crossbanding and cast brass backplate handles.

Authentic pieces display hand-dovetailed drawer construction, oak or pine secondary framing, period-correct brass drop handles, and natural age-related shrinkage to the timber veneers.

Position the desk against a neutral feature wall accompanied by a understated contemporary chair, or utilise it as an entry console or bedroom dressing table alongside modern lighting.

Maintain the finish by keeping the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer movement, cleaning surfaces with a dry cloth and applying beeswax annually.
