A George II burr walnut kneehole desk from around 1735, combining rich timber grains with functional storage. The structure uses burr walnut veneer and feather banding, finished in a warm brown tone that highlights the natural figuring of the wood. The top features a caddy moulded edge, sitting above a long frieze drawer fitted with decorative batwing brass handles and an escutcheon. Flanking the central kneehole are six smaller drawers, three to each side, all retaining matching brass hardware and keyholes. A recessed cupboard door occupies the central kneehole space, complete with exposed brass hinges and an operational keyhole. The entire unit rests on shaped bracket feet. Measuring 75 cm high, 74 cm wide and 47 cm deep, the desk offers a compact footprint suitable for studies, libraries or living rooms. Placement works well against a wall or as a freestanding writing surface, providing practical storage for stationery and correspondence while serving as a period focal point in a traditional interior.

Keep the desk away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting, and clean regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and high-grade beeswax.

Place the desk against a neutral wall in a study or hallway, pairing it with a contemporary task chair or minimalist table lamp to create visual contrast.

Authentic George II desks feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, oak secondary drawer linings, natural timber shrinkage along joints, and period-accurate brass batwing escutcheons.

These pieces were typically constructed using native softwoods or oak for the secondary carcase, veneered with burr walnut or mahogany, and finished with cast brass hardware.

A Georgian kneehole desk is an 18th-century piece of furniture featuring a central recessed cupboard or open space for legroom, flanked by vertical banks of small drawers.
