Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Queen Anne estate desk of the 1700 period exhibits a warm brown colour with burr walnut veneer and brass drop handles. The piece stands upon round bun feet and includes a recessed kneehole cupboard, a series of twelve drawers with figured fronts, and an angled reading slope resting on the top surface. Brass escutcheons adorn the drawers, which are arranged in two pedestals flanking a central section under a flat top. The desk measures 88 cm high, 102 cm wide, and 62 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this merchant desk serves as a working writing table or a statement piece of study furniture within a library or home office. The compact arrangement of multiple small drawers provides practical storage for stationery and correspondence, while the top slope creates a dedicated surface for reading or composition. The traditional form integrates readily into period or transitional interior schemes as a functional workspace.

FAQs

Queen Anne furniture, originating from early 18th-century England, is characterised by graceful proportions, restrained ornamentation, and the extensive use of figure walnut veneers. Key hallmarks include cabriole legs, pad feet, bracket feet, and refined kneehole desk forms.

These pieces were typically constructed with solid pine or oak carcasses veneered in highly patterned burr or feather-banded walnut. Hardware featured cast brass backplates and drop handles, alongside brass hinges on slant fronts or reading slopes.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints in drawer construction, oak or pine drawer linings, and natural age-related shrinkage in the timber veneers. The backplates of brass hardware will show signs of hand-casting and hand-finished threading.

A kneehole desk can serve as a functional statement piece in a contemporary study, home library, or living area. Pair the warm walnut tones with neutral wall palettes, clean-lined brass lighting, and a modern desk chair to contrast traditional craftsmanship with modern design.

Keep walnut veneer away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent cracking and lifting. Dust regularly with a clean, soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to nourish the wood.
