Large Heavy 238g German Hanau Solid Silver Cigarette Table Jewellery Box C1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautiful German Hanau solid silver cigarette / cigar, jewellery or table box. It is hallmarked with the German Hanau marks and tests as 800 grade silver - I would date it to c1900. It has been superbly made being finely decorated with classical figures to the lid and foliage to the sides. It is in super condition being free from dings splits holes and repairs, the inside is clean and gilded. It measures approx. 4.75 inches (12.2cm) across by 3.25 inches (8.2cm) wide by 1.75 inches (4.4cm) tall and weighs 238 grams. A very well made piece.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Hanau pseudo-hallmarks on the rim: German decorative silver from the turn of the century.
Historicist figural relief on the lid: popular revival of eighteenth-century rococo scenes.
Softening on high points of the relief: gentle wear from decades of polishing.
Gilt interior wash: standard practice to prevent tarnishing inside trinket boxes.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

This German Hanau solid silver box dates to 1900 and functions as a cigarette, cigar, trinket, or jewellery container. The piece is cast from 800-grade silver and finished with a polished silver tone and gilded interior, displaying a rectangular hinged lid adorned with a repousse classical figural scene, corner shell motifs, and elaborate foliate scrollwork borders along both the lid and the textured sides. It measures 12.2 cm across by 8.2 cm wide by 4.4 cm tall and weighs 238 grams. In a modern home, this table box sits elegantly on an office desk, library table, or dressing surface to hold small personal valuables, keepsakes, or desk accessories. The clean construction maintains its original structure free from major faults, presenting a solid metal form suitable for daily functional use or ornamental display within a traditional interior space.

FAQs

Hanau silver refers to silver objects produced in the town of Hanau, Germany, primarily from the late 19th century through the early 20th century. Silversmiths in Hanau specialised in creating high-quality historicist silver, crafting pieces inspired by Renaissance, Rococo, and Baroque designs.

These boxes were constructed using solid silver sheet metal formed and decorated using casting and repousse techniques, where design elements are hammered in relief from the reverse side. Lids were fitted using pin hinges, and surface details were refined with hand-chasing.

Hanau silversmiths typically marked their wares with pseudo-hallmarks that mimicked historic French, Dutch, or early German town marks rather than official state standard marks. Authentic items feature these maker-specific pseudo-marks alongside hand-chased relief ornamentation.

A silver table box can be positioned on an office desk, coffee table, or console surface as a decorative container. It functions effectively to hold stationery items or jewellery while adding reflective metallic contrast to wood or stone surfaces.

Maintain the box by dusting regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and polishing occasionally with a dry silver polishing cloth. Avoid liquid chemical dips or abrasive pastes, as these can strip intentional oxidisation from recessed relief areas and damage mechanical hinges.
