Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late Victorian open bookcases were produced during the final decades of the nineteenth century, characterised by exposed shelving designed for easy access to literature. They typically feature heavy architectural mouldings, flat plinth bases, and carved details such as rosettes or paterae, often constructed from dark hardwoods like walnut or mahogany.

Victorian furniture makers favoured dense hardwoods, with walnut, mahogany, and oak being the primary choices. The internal shelving and backing panels were often made of solid timber or pine secondary wood, with brass or wooden sawtooth mechanisms used for height adjustment.

Authentic pieces display period-appropriate construction markers, including hand-sawn secondary timber on the backboards, natural age patina on the finish, and traditional adjustable shelf supports like wooden sawtooth ratchets or recessed metal pegs. The presence of hand-carved decorative elements and grain patterns unique to walnut timber also helps confirm authenticity.

Position the bookcase against a neutral or rich wall space in a study, living room, or hallway. Balance collections of bound volumes with decorative ceramics, glassware, or framed art to create visual interest and break up large runs of book spines.

Dust the wood regularly with a clean, soft microfibre cloth following the natural grain line. Protect the original finish by applying a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year and placing the furniture away from direct sunlight, radiators, or damp environments.
