A sensational ruby and old cut diamond buckle ring, beautifully crafted in platinum and dating from the 1940s.

This remarkable ring captures the glamour of the late Art Deco and early Retro periods. Its wonderfully sculptural design takes the form of a stylised buckle, combining sweeping scrolls, strong geometric lines and beautifully contrasting gemstones.

Approximately 1.00 carat of bright old cut diamonds is arranged across the curved buckle and rolled terminals. Their characteristic hand-cut facets give the ring a lively, individual sparkle that is quite different from that of modern brilliant cut stones.

Two precisely arranged rows of square calibré cut rubies trace the outline of the buckle. Their vivid red colour provides a striking contrast against the brilliance of the diamonds and the cool white sheen of the platinum.

The substantial shoulders form an integral part of the design, giving the ring tremendous presence on the hand. Despite its impressive proportions and weight, the openwork construction beneath the setting prevents it from appearing heavy.
