Ritas Bazaar has dated this Silver Enamel Elephant Box to the 1940s.
The hinged lid depicts a richly caparisoned ceremonial elephant walking beneath a flowering tree.
A vivid green textured ground creates a striking contrast with the deep blue, pink, black, yellow and white enamel decoration. The composition is framed by a broad floral border in blue and gold tones against a dark aubergine ground.
This celebrated decorative motif is closely associated with Indian silver and enamel work. The fine detailing, jewel-like colours and generous use of silver give the piece considerable visual presence. The sides, underside and interior have been left in plain polished silver, providing an elegant contrast to the richly decorated lid.
Its practical proportions make the piece suitable for a standard deck of playing cards or for King Size cigarettes. It may also be used as a jewellery, keepsake or small valuables box. Condition:
Excellent vintage condition. The enamel is exceptionally well preserved, retaining its strong and vivid colours. There are a few minor, barely visible hairlines in isolated areas of the enamel. The plain silver surfaces show light scratches and gentle traces of use consistent with age. Otherwise, the box is in excellent condition.
The box is sold empty; playing cards and cigarettes are not included.
