Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A silver fruit knife is a small folding knife featuring a sterling silver blade and typically a mother-of-pearl handle, designed specifically for peeling and cutting fruit. Unlike steel, silver does not react with fruit acids or alter the taste of the fruit, making it a popular personal dining accessory during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries.

These folding knives were constructed with solid sterling silver blades and spring mechanisms. The handles were frequently crafted from carved iridescent mother-of-pearl, often accented with silver cartouches and decorative chasing along the back spring.

Authentic English sterling silver fruit knives feature official hallmarks stamped directly on the blade, including the lion passant mark, assay town mark, makers initials, and a date letter code. Furthermore, the blade will be made entirely of solid silver rather than silver plate to resist corrosion from acidic juices.

An antique fruit knife can be styled as a curio on an office desk, displayed inside a shallow shadow box frame, or positioned on a silver tray within a dining space. It also serves as a tactile decorative object within a collectors cabinet or gentlemans library.

Gently polish the silver blade using a soft microfibre cloth and a non-abrasive silver polishing cream, taking care to avoid getting chemicals on the natural mother-of-pearl handle. Store the item in a dry environment wrapped in anti-tarnish tissue paper to prevent oxidisation.
