Superb Georgian Period Figured Walnut Bureau with Red Leather Writing Surface

A superb Georgian period walnut bureau of elegant proportions, displaying exceptionally beautiful figuring and a wonderfully rich, warm colour throughout.

The fall-front features striking, carefully matched walnut veneers, whose flowing grain patterns give the piece a particularly decorative and distinctive appearance. When lowered, the front opens to reveal a fitted interior comprising pigeonholes, small drawers and a central cupboard, providing excellent practical storage for letters, stationery and personal items.

The writing surface is inset with an attractive red leather skiver, creating a handsome contrast with the rich walnut. The fall-front is supported by its pull-out lopers and is fitted with a working lock. A key is also included, allowing the bureau to be securely closed.

Below are four spacious graduated drawers, each fitted with decorative brass swing handles and shaped brass escutcheons. The drawers retain their traditional hand-cut dovetail construction and provide a generous amount of useful storage.

The bureau stands on classic shaped bracket feet, which complement its well-balanced Georgian form. The solid oak side panels are an especially attractive and interesting feature. They have been carefully stained and finished in a warm tone that harmonises beautifully with the walnut veneers. The natural oak grain remains clearly visible, together with the traditional exposed dovetail joints along the upper edges of the carcass, demonstrating the bureau’s authentic period construction and craftsmanship.

The walnut exterior has been traditionally French polished to enhance the depth, warmth and exceptional figuring of the veneers. The solid oak side panels have been carefully cleaned, and hand waxed, resulting in a beautifully balanced and lustrous finish throughout.

Condition

Structurally solid and presented in excellent antique condition, with only minor age-related marks and signs of use consistent with its considerable age. The drawers run smoothly, and the fall-front, supports and locking mechanism all operate correctly.
